Did you know that the average American consumes between 4,000 and 5,000 mg of sodium (or salt) a day. That is close to double the recommended amount we should be consuming. So, how can we start eating less salt in our daily diet, without sacrificing flavor? Before we get into the specifics of why it is a bad idea to eat that much salt, let’s take a look at why we should worry about it in the first place. Consuming too much salt can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, edema and kidney stones. Your body also needs more...
So, I missed a week last week, but have no fear, I am back! I actually gained weight last week, but I think that was because a lot of the weight that I lost that week was due to the food poisoning. I need one more week to break below the 280 barrier for real, and not just because I’m dehydrated. As always, click on the picture to see the no-shirt version Weight: 280.2
I believe it is of paramount important to record what you eat each and every day to make sure you are not only staying within your alotted calorie allowance, but also that you are eating the right kinds of food. To show you how important I believe it is, I have I have added a section to the right hand side of this page that shows my daily food journal. I enter the information on The Daily Plate brought to you by Livestrong.com every single day, whether it is good or bad.
I encourage all of you to do...
This was a rough week for me. I didn't get to the gym as often as I would have liked due to my schedule and Monday night I suffered from a really bad case of food poisoning. I am still recovering, but I wanted to get the pictures taken anyway. Weight loss wise it was a pretty good week with 4 pounds coming off!

Question: On all of the cardio machines at the gym, I see mention of a Fat-Burning Zone. I hear that if your heart rate exceeds this, you won't burn as much fat. Is that true? Answer: This is one of those misconceptions that should be put to rest once and for all. The "fat-burning zone" idea got its start about 15 years ago, when scientists reported that during high-intensity aerobic exercises, the body burned mostly stored carbohydrates for fuel, as opposed to burning stored fat as it did during lower-intensity activity. Exercise...
One of the biggest problems I had in my previous attempts to lose weight was that I would always see results by just dieting. I never had any motivation to exercise (unless you consider my wife telling me that I need to get off my butt as motivation.) I even joined a gym for a year and ended up going less than 20 times before I finally canceled it. When I decided to lose weight this time around I wanted to do it right and make sure I got my exercise in; but the question remained how do I stay...
Question: What the HECK does BMR stand for?
Answer: Basal Metabolic Rate
But what does it REALLY mean? Your Basal Metablic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body will burn in a day just keeping you alive. If you were to stay in bed all day and watch reruns of Lost, your body would still use these calories to breathe, grow your hair, blink, etc.
Great! Now you know what BMR stands for, but why do you need to know? What good is that number to you? Knowing your BMR is critical during any weight loss journey. Once you know your BMR,...
This is the first of weekly progress updates that will include weight updates as well as pictures. I am taking two different sets of pictures, one with my shirt on and one with it off. I will only be inlining the picture with my shirt on, but if you want to see the most dramatic results you will probably want to look at the shirt off pictures as well. I apologize in advance for my hairy chest :)
On all of these posts, if you click the picture with the shirt you will be taken to the picture with no shirt.

How about a brief update? I am just over 1 month into the process and have lost 17 pounds! I started at 300 pounds and I am currently at 283. There is a weight loss ticker on the page that displays up to the minute status on where I am in my journey. I will have reached my goal weight when I hit 200.
That's it for now. But I expect there will be much more in the coming months.
